NCRR Meeting Notes
Wednesday, August 9, 2000, 12:00 pm
Rob MacLeod and Dave Weinstein
With these meetings we hope to achieve the following goals
- Make sure all members of the NCRR group know each other
and are aware of both the long terms goals and the course of
progress of the projects.
- Report progress, present ideas, and
solicit feedback and ideas in front of the group.
- Constantly review and upgrade priorities of the various
projects and ensure that tangential concerns do not distract from
the progress of the group.
- Maintain momentum on the high priority projects.
- Vis 2000 Demos:
- Reminder about the Visualization 2000
conference in October and that we will have an evening visit from
conference attendees to show projects within the School of
Computing. For this, we need to develop some demos that emphasize
the application area of our activities. Please contact Dave or
Rob for specific ideas of what you would like to demonstrate. We
will also be approaching people to help develop and present other
demos.
- Michael Callahan:
- Please welcome Michael Callahan (michaelc@cs)
to the NCRR team. Michael will be in Dave Hart's office until we
get the next round of renovations and moving finished (should be
within 2 weeks).
- Annual Report:
- Rob and Greg have completed the annual report and
it is available to check out at
www.sci.utah.edu/nih/report00/distrib/report-distrib.
We will be moving it to a more permanent site shortly.
- We have had two excellent candidates to visit for the inverse
problems post-doc/staff scientist position and are still
deliberating on the touch choice we have. Please send comments to
Chris if you have any input you would be willing to share.
- Xinlong Wang will be coming to Utah as the meshing post-doc and we
expect him sometime in early September.
- Sourceforge:
- this software provides tools for packaging and
releasing software and Marty has been checking it out. The meeting
tomorrow will hopefully establish what role this system will play
in the BioPSE project.
- Fields class:
- Eric reports that he is almost done with a working
version of the fields class. He promises a brief presentation for
next week's meeting.
- Module review:
- we reviewed two modules today-see
www.cvrti.utah.edu/ macleod/ncrr/technical/histogram
for the histogram module and
www.cvrti.utah.edu/ macleod/ncrr/technical/showfield
for the showfield module design docs.
- Dave is working on an updated list of modules that we will review
next week and hopefully finalize (with some priority scores) and
thus establish the goals for release 1.0 of BioPSE.
- Upcoming conferences:
- Conferences coming up that are of special
relevance to the group include:
- Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES): October 12-14, 2000
in Seattle (Rob will be chairing a session).
www.engr.washington.edu/~uw-epp/bmes/
- Visualization 2000: Oct. 09, 2000 - Oct. 13, 2000, Salt
Lake City.
- NFSI III: September, 2001, Innsbruck, Austria
- Marty has been moving all the documentation from the csafe to the
sci servers, where it will live from now on. The csafe links will
go to the sci machine and we will be able to separate cleanly the
public (PSECommon and BioPSE) from the private (C-SAFE) materials.
- Note that each module subdirectory is expected to have its own doc
directory that contains all documentation for that module.
- Marty and Erik are working on style sheets for documentation from
the XML code we will use to document all the modules. Marty
estimates that in 1-2 weeks he will have a report of the steps for
documenting modules so that we can being to assign module
documentation of the PSECommon to others in the group.
- Erik and Rob are still working together on ways to convert LATEX
to HTML in a consistent layout and format for inclusion on the web
site with minimum work.
- Ted has created an overview of the document layout for the PSE and
everyone should check it out and provide feedback
www.sci.utah.edu/scirun_docs/doc/docMap.html
- Map3d progress:
- Rob is porting map3d to the CVRTI so that others
there can use it an provide suggestions and feedback.
- Release schedule:
- the plan is to have map3d released by
September 1, 2000.
- Documentation:
- there already exists a manual for map3d but this
will need updating prior to release.
- Xinlong Wang:
- see above for details.
- Laura's project :
- Laura is carrying out comparative studies of
the various beverages of Golden Colorado and will report back in a
week or so. We await her return with great interest...
- Chris Butson's project:
- Chris is working to refine his thesis
proposal ideas and is closing in on a topic.
- Leah's project:
- Leah is working on details of the project with
EGI group in Oregon. She and Dave will create a module that will
perform impedance tomography analysis of some simple models using
the finite element formulation that is similar to that which we use
in forward problems.
- Rob v. Uitert:
- Rob is working on the derivation of the magnetic
fields from his edge elements. Someday he will even tell us what
edge elements are...
- Data archive:
- No progress on this. But more requests for data
have arrived.
- Tracking hits:
- No progress on this.
- Web site parsing:
- Erik has found what he thinks is a good
package for parsing and checking web pages. He will continue to
test it out and report on progress (and tell us all why our web
pages are badly formed).
- BioPSE logo:
- Erik is working with Rob on a logo for BioPSE.
- NCRR Poster:
- The poster is nearing completion and we circulated
a draft at the meeting for comments. Erik has since placed an
updated version at
http://www.sci.utah.edu/~erikj/Miscellaneous/poster.pdf
so please
check this out and send comments to Rob and Dave.
Agenda for for future meetings
Most of the next meetings will be organized around the brief reports from
all present and then discussion of modules. Each person in the group has
volunteered for one more more modules and will lead the discussion, which
will center on the design and capabilities of the module. For details on
the overall layout of modules and a list of BioPSE modules we have
envisioned so far, go to
