NCRR Meeting Notes

Rob MacLeod
With these meetings we hope to achieve the following goals
- Make sure all members of the NCRR group know each other
and are aware of both the long terms goals and the course of
progress of the projects.
- Report progress, present ideas, and
solicit feedback and ideas in front of the group.
- Constantly review and upgrade priorities of the various
projects and ensure that tangential concerns do not distract from
the progress of the group.
- Maintain momentum on the high priority projects.
- Meeting time:
- The NEW regular time for the NCRR meeting
is Monday, 1:00-3:00 and we will alternate between
general meetings and developers' meetings. We ask that everyone
try and attend each of the general meetings, which will run much as
we have been doing it up to now (everyone reports on progress, then
we get to detailed technical discussions of program development).
Alternating weeks, we will have meetings with a brief introduction
section where anyone can bring up a specific point or questions,
then the rest dedicated entirely to development of BioPSE and
map3d.
- No news
- Installing SCIRun:
- Chris Moulding reported some progress on this
front-he has gone through some checks of the installation process
and located the problems with the Tcl version we are using and how
it can peacefully coexist with a similar version already installed
on a host machine. Chris has also created tar balls for all the
major platforms with all the third party libraries we need for an
installation of SCIRun in order to simplify this part of the
process.
- Sourceforge:
- We continue to wait for the details to work out on
this; we are the first open source type license on the campus, and
hence things are taking longer than planned. Greg is working on
this and has a meeting today to learn more.
- Fields class:
- We discussed the field class with Eric, based on
his design doc located in
www.sci.utah.edu/scirun_docs/src/SCICore/Datatypes/doc/domainDesign.html
- Michael and Fields:
- with Eric leaving soon, Michael will take
over the development and management of the fields class.
- Module review:
- No module reviews at this meeting. The
assignment (note: assignment-no more Mister Nice-Guy!) is
to read the list of modules and come prepared with one to present.
The list is at
www.cvrti.utah.edu/ macleod/ncrr/technical/modules.html.
Please send email to the group once you select the module you would
like to adopt.
- Upcoming conferences:
- Conferences coming up that are of special
relevance to the group include:
- Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES): October 12-14, 2000
in Seattle (Rob will be chairing a session).
www.engr.washington.edu/~uw-epp/bmes/
- Visualization 2000: Oct. 09, 2000 - Oct. 13, 2000, Salt
Lake City.
- 7th International Conference on
Numerical Grid Generation in Computational Field
Simulations: September 25-28, 2000, Whistler, British
Columbia, Canada. Xinlong will attend this,
and present a paper that Dave wrote with collaborators from
CalTech.
- NFSI III: September, 2001, Innsbruck, Austria.
- NCRR Seminars
-
- Tom Feree from U of Oregon has postponed his visit
because of an emergency and will reschedule as time
permits.
- Martin Schweiger from Simon Arridge's lab in London,
England will once again visit us in early September and we
will ask him to present an NCRR seminar. This project
involves diffuse optical tomography. Chris J. will be the
contact on this visit.
Documentation
- New SpecML:
- Ted is rewriting the SpecML document format to make
it simpler and easier to use. Marty reported that the doc group is
trying to identify a common (and smaller) set of tags for the XML
spec.
- Doc Link:
- The new link for all the BioPSE docs is
www.sci.utah.edu/scirun_docs/doc.
- Doc styles:
- Erik has made a document describing how to use his
style sheets to make consistent documentation. To try this out, go
to www.sci.utah.edu/scirun_docs/doc/ReferenceGuide/doc_markup.html
- Map3d progress:
- Rob, Chris, and now Guo are all working on
getting the version 1.0Beta of map3d ready for placement on the
website.
- Release schedule:
- Rob, Chris, and Guo have decided to complete a
short list of additional essential features for map3d before we
release the program. They are meeting every few days to keep
momentum hope to have things ready in another week or two.
- License:
- we discussed the license conditions for map3d and
decided to release an executable version for the various platforms
and thus will require a different software license from that we are
developing for BioPSE. Greg will look into the details of the
options that University already has in place (if any) for this type
of license.
- User support:
- Rob is writing the user manual for map3d and Marty
agreed to set up a bugzilla list for users to report problems and
suggestions.
- Xinlong Wang:
- has arrived and is settling in.
- Eric Kuehne leaving:
- Unfortunately, Eric will be leaving us for
the richer pastures of industries. We hope he misses us as much as
we will miss him.
- Position open:
- with Eric leaving, we need to finds another
programmer for the project. Please let us know if you know anyone
and encourage them to go to the UoU HR site and consider applying.
- Jason:
- Jason is back from Lawrence Livermore labs after doing
some Java work on the user interfaces for some of their codes. He
will not have time to do programming for the project at this stage
of his semester but will try and attend meetings and follow the
course of the project.
- Laura's project :
- Dave has given Laura some image data to explore
for her project.
- Chris Butson's project:
- no update
- Leah's project:
- Leah is back from a short vacation and will
continue to work on the project until Sept. 23, when she heads back
to CalTech for the academic year.
- Rob v. Uitert:
- is finishing his comprehensive exams and has a
new book that will hopefully explain the edge elements that he
needs.
- Chris Z.:
- Chris is working with Dave on a computation of
conductivity values based on geometry information and impedance
tomography measurements of injected current and resulting scalp
potentials.
- Dave W.:
- Dave is working on a method to estimate the
conductivity values and distribution based on an impedance
tomography data set. He has it working on idealized geometries
(cylinders) now but will soon move it to head geometries.
- Data archive:
- Erik has put some of this together and needs to
get some data from Rob.
- Tracking hits:
- Erik said he would check if there were some way
to generate text files from the tracking program that we could send
out via email or record in a log file.
- Additions:
- Erik has created a place on the site with the release
schedule for software; he has also made some doc style sheets which
are in the CVS tree and available for use.
- BioPSE logo:
- no update
- Web site parsing:
- Erik has the new program for checking the web
site, but has not had time to apply it to the NCRR site.
- no news
Agenda for for future meetings
Specific agenda items for the next meeting include:
- Update on NCRR seminar speakers and scheduling their talks
- Schedule for NCRR meetings
- Ted and Marty's presentation of the XML module template and tools for
editing and viewing them
- Event manager for BioPSE
- Installation of BioPSE
Most of the next meetings will be organized around the brief reports from
all present and then discussion of modules. Each person in the group has
volunteered for one more more modules and will lead the discussion, which
will center on the design and capabilities of the module. For details on
the overall layout of modules and a list of BioPSE modules we have
envisioned so far, go to
